When do you need a structural engineer?
You usually need a structural engineer when you remove or change a load-bearing wall, add an extension or second storey, build a carport or verandah, notice cracking or movement in a building, or need to legalise works that were built without a permit. A building surveyor will often ask for engineering drawings and calculations before issuing a building permit.
